 Introduction to Salah Ud Din Ayubi  Early Life and Background Salah Ud Din Ayubi, known in the West as Saladin, was born in 1137 in Tikrit, in present-day Iraq. He hailed from a prominent Kurdish family that was well-known for its military service. His father, Najm ad-Din Ayyub, served the Zengid dynasty, which ruled over parts of Syria and Iraq.
